La Porte Independent School District has been awarded a $15,000 grant through Port Houston's Community Grants Program to expand STEM opportunities for students across the district's STEM Academies. 

The grant will expand STEM opportunities across the district’s STEM Academies by providing additional resources and learning opportunities that enhance STEM programming and support innovative, hands-on experiences. These opportunities will strengthen student engagement, encourage innovation, collaboration, and real-world application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts, while preparing students for future careers in high-demand STEM fields. 

"We are building something special in La Porte," said Elementary STEM and Advanced Academics Specialist Michael Newman, who secured the grant. "Creating a lasting STEM legacy for our students is becoming a reality, and we are excited to continue expanding our program, providing meaningful experiences, and empowering teachers with innovative resources." 

Of the 32 grants awarded through the 2026 Port Houston Community Grants Program, La Porte ISD is the only school district selected to receive funding. 

Port Houston's Community Grants Program is part of the organization's strategic community outreach efforts, investing in meaningful projects and programs that enhance local communities throughout the region. Since the program's inception in 2020, Port Houston has invested more than $2 million in community initiatives.
