Free Breakfast & Lunch in 2024-25
Breakfasts and lunches will be served at no cost to all La Porte ISD students during the 2024-25 school year.
The district will operate the Community Eligibility Provision under the National School Lunch Program and National School Breakfast Program and will not require families to submit applications; every student will have automatic access, said School Nutrition Director Ralph Wilkins.
“The elimination of meal applications will reduce the burden on families and will prevent negative meal account balances and make serving lines move faster,” Wilkins said. “This will also allow the La Porte ISD School Nutrition department to expand our focus on student-centered meal innovation and our local foods program.”
La Porte ISD has been honored for five straight years by the Texas Department of Agriculture for serving such items as locally sourced produce, meat and bread.
Though there are no longer any free or reduced-price meal applications, the district encourages families to complete a socioeconomic survey that will be released in August. This will help La Porte ISD maintain funding that directly benefits students, Wilkins said.
"Offering free breakfasts and lunches for students not only ensures they receive delicious and nutritious meals, but it also provides much-needed relief to family budgets,” said Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson. “This initiative supports both the health of our children and the financial well-being of our community, and I am very pleased at the efforts of our School Nutrition Department to bring this program to fruition in La Porte ISD.
